NIGERIA FACES SERIOUS TEACHER SHORTAGE: ABOUT 54 LEARNERS TO ONE TEACHER

🇳🇬 EDUCATION INFORMATION SOCIETY OF NIGERIA (EISN) NIGERIA FACES SERIOUS TEACHER SHORTAGE: ABOUT 54 LEARNERS TO ONE TEACHER Nigeria’s education sector is facing a significant teacher shortage, with 592,077 teachers reportedly serving 31,827,244 learners in public schools across the country. According to figures reported from the Digital Nigeria Education Management Information System (DNEMIS), this represents an average of approximately 54 learners to one teacher. This situation highlights the enormous pressure on Nigeria’s public education system, particularly at the basic education level. Large class sizes can make it difficult for teachers to give adequate attention to individual learners while managing heavy workloads. The Education Information Society of Nigeria (EISN) calls for greater attention to: - Recruitment of more qualified teachers - Continuous training and development of teachers - Improved welfare and working conditions - Investment in classrooms and educational infrastructure - Better distribution of teachers, particularly in underserved communities With more than 31.8 million learners and fewer than 600,000 teachers in the reported public-school figures, urgent and sustainable intervention is needed. Quality education requires not only access to school but also enough qualified teachers to teach every child effectively. 📚🇳🇬 Education Information Society of Nigeria (EISN) “Let the son of nobody become somebody without knowing anybody.”
